Superheroes will be flying into the CBD in April. The show caters for die-hard fans of comics and those curious about the latest pop culture trends. This year’s edition will be bigger and better with international and local celebrities, comic book artists, writers, illustrators and popular television and movie stars. There will also be a variety of exhibitors and vendors, featuring the latest in pop-culture merchandise, gaming, comic books and collectibles.

Good Life Show 2024

This one-of-a-kind show is for anyone interested in food, health, wellness and reducing their impact on the planet. The world-renowned Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF) is back to connect music lovers after a Covid-19 induced hiatus. The festival’s head of talent, Lindsay Rhoda, told IOL that they have worked hard over the past few months “to compile a programme that pays homage to the heritage of our jazz roots, but also speaks to the exciting future of music that is embracing all jazz-related genres as anthems for a new tomorrow”. Some of the artists who will take to the stage include Matt Bianco (UK), The Yussef Dayes Experience (UK), Nduduzo Makhathini Trio featuring Omagugu (SA), Mandisi Dyantyis (SA), Zoë Modiga (SA) and Kujenga (SA).

Waterfront Canal Challenge
6 April 2024

The Waterfront Rotary Club is hosting an urban canal swim fundraiser to support its projects such as the Christine Revell Children’s Home and the Salesian Institute. Swimmers of all ages and abilities are welcome to join Africa’s only timed urban canal swim. A 6 km run will also form part of the activities with lots of exciting prizes on offer. There will also be a school event on the day with the opportunity for schools to win the inaugural Waterfront Canal Challenge trophy. While the event is outside the CCID’s footprint, it is a worthy cause worth supporting.

Mamma Mia!

A new-look production of Mamma Mia is the next big show to grace the Artscape Theatre Centre after The Sound of Music. It’s produced by SA promoter Showtime Management and features a full South African cast, crew and band. Audiences can look forward to stunning sets and wardrobes and timeless ABBA songs including “Dancing Queen” and “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme”. Mamma Mia! has reportedly been seen by more than 65 million people in 50 countries around the globe since 1999. Don’t miss it.

The countdown is on for the fun Absa RUN YOUR CITY Cape Town 10K, which ends with a sea of people in Lower Long St. The Cape Town leg of the series starts at Woodbridge Island. For the first time ever, organisers have introduced a fun 10 KM School’s Challenge and are calling on all Western Cape based schools to sign up for the event on 12 May. The contest is open to participants aged 14 to 19 and includes separate divisions for boys and girls. Schools are encouraged to register multiple teams, each consisting of five learners.

Desmond & Leah Tutu House has an extraordinary exhibition of 90 women who played a role in South Africa's liberation struggle. Entitled 90 Voices HERstory, the exhibition is inspired by activist Leah Tutu who turned 90 last year. The women featured range from activists, artists, politicians and educators. Visitors can scan the QR code on each tribute poster to get a glimpse into how each woman shaped our history. In addition to this show, Desmond & Leah Tutu House also has Truth to Power and the Old Granary on display.

Celebrated and multi-award-winning South African artist Dr Esther Mahlangu is being honoured with a retrospective highlighting her career spanning 50 years and her meteoric rise as a contemporary artist. After being shown at Iziko, the show, curated by Nontobeko Ntombela, will embark on a global tour, stopping first at the Wits Art Museum in Johannesburg before moving to the United States in early 2026.

Hidden Wonders of the Iziko South African Museum
