This past Sunday, 15 January 2017, part of the Central City went car free, and the influx of people was astounding. Here’s a look at the day, with images courtesy of Lars Espeter.
At 10h00, as the morning drizzle began to clear, Bree Street became a pedestrian paradise ripe with potential. By 11h00, it was full with people walking, cycling, skating, dancing and enjoying the sunshine. Chalk drawings covered the asphalt and kids played where cars are usually king.
This was the third Open Streets Day in the CBD, and the 10th overall, and this time the organisers included a section of Longmarket Street. The aim was to give attendees an opportunity to explore more of the CBD on foot or by bike.
Open Streets Cape Town co-founder and MD Marcela Guerrero Casas said: “We believe Open Streets can bring our neighbourhoods a little closer together and connect us all in an inclusive and playful environment. It is a simple but powerful way to establish common ground and an opportunity to explore a space that belongs to all.”

Activities included ball games, gymnastics, yoga, capoeira, salsa and performance art. A children’s author read to kids at The Book Station and LifeLine Western Cape counsellors offered their ears to anyone who wanted to talk. Among the 45 activity providers were the Rosa Choir Project and GAPP Architects. It really was a day for everyone.

Cape Town Central City Improvement District (CCID) CEO Tasso Evangelinos noted that Open Streets gives citizens a “crucial” opportunity to explore alternatives to driving. This, he said, was in line with the CCID’s efforts to reduce traffic congestion in the CBD.
